WordPress broken after an update: how to investigate
07/10/2026Is your WordPress website unavailable? Start by finding out how much of the site is affected. The problem may involve hosting, the domain or your connection rather than WordPress itself.
1. Establish the scope
Open the homepage and an inner page in a private browser window. Try another device or a mobile connection too. One broken page is a different starting point from a website that cannot be reached at all.
2. Record the exact error
Save the URL, time and full message. A screenshot helps the person investigating. Check whether the WordPress login page still loads. Do not publish passwords or confidential logs.
- Domain not found: ask the provider to check the domain and DNS.
- Certificate warning: have the host investigate the certificate rather than bypassing the browser warning.
- Server error or timeout: check hosting incidents and available resources.
- Critical WordPress error: review recent changes and check for a recovery email.
3. Avoid several repairs at once
Changing plugins, PHP versions and database values in a rush makes diagnosis harder. Record whether an update, migration or other change happened just before the outage. Ask the host for relevant error logs. Preserve the current state before technical intervention.
4. Consider the impact of restoring a backup
An older backup can overwrite new enquiries or content. Check the backup date, its scope and what would be lost before restoring it. After repair, test important inner pages and the contact form as well as the homepage.
What does support need?
Provide the site address, error message, when it started, recent changes and available backups. Explain which missing functions are important to your work. This gives support a useful starting point without requiring you to diagnose the fault yourself.
