At a glance
Similar filenames and repeated uploads slow down image selection. A simple naming convention makes the media library easier for the whole team to use.

Approach and context
Distinguish the filename, media title, alternative text and caption. They have different purposes: a filename identifies the asset, while alternative text conveys its relevant meaning in context. Before removing an old file, investigate where it is used. A file marked unattached may still appear in a builder layout or in a link outside WordPress.
Implementation checklist
- Agree a useful filename convention for new assets.
- Distinguish similar views and language versions before uploading.
- Check usage and arrange recoverable backups before a cleanup.
Illustrative example
Instead of uploading several files called final-new.jpg, a product photograph is named by product and viewpoint. Another editor can locate the approved side view without opening every similar image.
A common pitfall
A folder extension does not by itself remove duplicates or establish editorial ownership.
How to check the outcome
A second editor can find the required asset and identify the approved version.
