At a glance
A category archive can offer more than an unstructured list. It should help visitors explore a recognisable subject area.

Approach and context
Define which content belongs in the category and how it differs from neighbouring topics. A short introduction can explain that scope. Check whether entries have meaningful titles and helpful excerpts. Display and editing options depend on the theme. Categories with little content or almost identical article lists need an editorial decision.
Implementation checklist
- Describe the purpose and boundary of each main category.
- Review titles, excerpts and ordering from a new reader’s perspective.
- Assess duplicates and lightly used categories before merging them.
Illustrative example
An Editorial category contains guidance on roles, approvals and content maintenance. Payment settings belong elsewhere even though both are managed in the WordPress administration area.
A common pitfall
Adding more keywords to a category name does not fix an unclear classification.
How to check the outcome
The archive communicates its subject and leads to recognisably relevant articles.
