Planning WordPress internal links around user tasks

At a glance

Internal links should help readers take a relevant next step. Their purpose is clearer when the destination and its relationship to the current text are apparent.

Clarify requirements, plan the work and verify the result.

Approach and context

Begin with a question your visitors need to resolve. Link from an explanation to the relevant detailed guide or service. Use wording that identifies the destination and helps someone scanning the page. A fixed quota of links per paragraph is not a useful quality target. After renaming content, check whether older links still deliver what their wording promises.

Implementation checklist

  • Identify important entry pages and their likely follow-up questions.
  • Connect relevant destinations using descriptive wording in context.
  • Check the destination’s address, language and availability.

Illustrative example

A guide to image descriptions links to media-library maintenance where appropriate. Several identical “click here” links to unrelated services would offer much less help with that task.

A common pitfall

Many similar links without a clear distinction make the choice harder.

How to check the outcome

A new visitor can reach the relevant next step without starting another search.
