Is your WordPress website unavailable? Start by finding out how much of the site is affected. The problem may involve hosting, the domain or your connection rather than WordPress itself.

1. Establish the scope

Open the homepage and an inner page in a private browser window. Try another device or a mobile connection too. One broken page is a different starting point from a website that cannot be reached at all.

2. Record the exact error

Save the URL, time and full message. A screenshot helps the person investigating. Check whether the WordPress login page still loads. Do not publish passwords or confidential logs.

Domain not found: ask the provider to check the domain and DNS.

Certificate warning: have the host investigate the certificate rather than bypassing the browser warning.

Server error or timeout: check hosting incidents and available resources.

Critical WordPress error: review recent changes and check for a recovery email.

3. Avoid several repairs at once

Changing plugins, PHP versions and database values in a rush makes diagnosis harder. Record whether an update, migration or other change happened just before the outage. Ask the host for relevant error logs. Preserve the current state before technical intervention.

4. Consider the impact of restoring a backup

An older backup can overwrite new enquiries or content. Check the backup date, its scope and what would be lost before restoring it. After repair, test important inner pages and the contact form as well as the homepage.

What does support need?

Provide the site address, error message, when it started, recent changes and available backups. Explain which missing functions are important to your work. This gives support a useful starting point without requiring you to diagnose the fault yourself.

An error after an update is an important clue, but timing alone does not prove the cause. A controlled investigation is more useful than trying several fixes at once.

Identify what changed

Record the plugins, theme and WordPress version involved. Note when the problem started and whether it affects appearance, login or forms. Before-and-after screenshots make comparisons easier.

Check recovery mode

For some fatal errors, WordPress can send the administrator a recovery-mode email. Check that mailbox. Recovery mode can help narrow down a fault, but it does not automatically fix every cause. Only use a message you can verify belongs to your own installation.

Investigate on a test copy

A separate staging environment allows investigation without additional changes to the public site. A specialist can check recently changed components individually. If several plugins are changed together, it becomes difficult to tell which action helped.

A rollback is not a complete restore

Replacing older plugin files may not undo database changes. Before a rollback or backup restore, identify data added since the backup. This is especially important for shops and bookings. Avoid plugin packages from unknown download sources.

Test the result

Open important pages on desktop and mobile.

Send a clearly labelled test enquiry through the contact form.

Check search, login and essential business functions where applicable.

Refresh stale cache entries as needed.

Record the cause and the action that resolved it.

Website maintenance should therefore include more than clicking Update. A backup, a suitable maintenance window and a functional check belong to the same process.

A WordPress backup is useful only if it covers the right information and can be recovered. A successful backup notification does not tell you exactly what was included.

What needs to be backed up?

A complete backup needs both website files and the database. Content and settings are stored in the database, while uploaded images and extensions are among the files. A WordPress content export alone is therefore not a complete website backup.

Ask these questions

When was the last complete backup?

Were files and the database captured in the same backup process?

Where is the copy stored and who can access it?

How long are earlier versions retained?

Who can perform a restore?

Choose a suitable frequency

Consider how much work you could afford to lose. An occasional information page differs from a site receiving daily orders. Maintenance appointments and backup schedules need not match. Have a recent recovery point before major changes.

Include a recovery test

Ask your provider to test a restore in a separate environment. Check pages, images and important functions there. Record the steps and time needed. A backup stored only on the same server does not cover every failure of that server; discuss separate, access-protected storage.

Before restoring

A restore may overwrite newer content or enquiries. Confirm the date and expected data loss before proceeding. Following a security incident, check whether the selected backup was already affected. Protect stored backups from unauthorised access to any customer information they contain.

A slow WordPress website does not automatically need another optimisation plugin. Start by measuring and finding out whether the issue affects visitors, the dashboard or only particular pages.

Establish a useful baseline

Test the homepage and important inner pages under comparable conditions. Record the date, device and tool. Repeat the measurement because individual results vary. A good score does not replace checking the site on a real phone.

Review images and embedded content

Large images, videos and external widgets can add loading work. Ask which elements the page actually needs. A decorative feature should justify its cost. Keep original images before resizing or compressing alternatives.

Review caching and extensions

Caching can reduce work for repeated page visits, but must suit forms, user accounts and any shop features. Several competing cache systems are not automatically better. Also check extensions that load files everywhere even when their features are used only occasionally.

Consider hosting

If the dashboard is slow too, discuss server load and error logs with the host. Changing hosting plans without diagnosing the cause may waste money. Image optimisation alone cannot fully solve a server-side issue either.

Compare one change at a time

Choose a specific measure and record the baseline.

Apply it in a test environment where possible.

Check appearance and important functions.

Measure again under the same conditions.

The goal is a usable website. Avoid changes that improve a score while breaking menus, forms or content.

Keeping WordPress plugins current is part of routine website care. A consistent process makes changes traceable and helps you respond if something goes wrong.

Before updating

Check which extensions are used and who maintains them.

Read release notes and requirements.

Have a recent backup of files and the database.

Choose a time when you can test afterwards.

Use a separate test environment for complex websites.

If a plugin handles bookings, payments or user access, include that workflow in your checks. Looking at the homepage alone is not enough.

During the update

Keep a record of what changes. Major version jumps may need extra preparation. Do not interrupt a running process prematurely. If a message remains unusually long, record it and investigate the state instead of starting more updates on top of it.

After updating

Check affected features, mobile layouts and important forms. For a test enquiry, verify delivery as well as the success message. Refresh cached pages where needed and record the outcome.

Should updates be automatic?

That depends on the website and the monitoring available. Automatic updates do not remove the need for backups and functional checks. Decide who handles error reports and which components need particular attention.

If a problem appears

Record the plugin, change and time. Avoid several repair attempts at once. Whether to apply a fix, roll back or restore a backup depends on the fault and any data created in the meantime.

Help with your website

If you cannot confidently identify the cause, tell us what happened and what changed recently. We will discuss the next appropriate step with you. Request WordPress help.
