Slow WordPress website: improve loading times step by step

A slow WordPress website does not automatically need another optimisation plugin. Start by measuring and finding out whether the issue affects visitors, the dashboard or only particular pages.

Establish a useful baseline

Test the homepage and important inner pages under comparable conditions. Record the date, device and tool. Repeat the measurement because individual results vary. A good score does not replace checking the site on a real phone.

Review images and embedded content

Large images, videos and external widgets can add loading work. Ask which elements the page actually needs. A decorative feature should justify its cost. Keep original images before resizing or compressing alternatives.

Review caching and extensions

Caching can reduce work for repeated page visits, but must suit forms, user accounts and any shop features. Several competing cache systems are not automatically better. Also check extensions that load files everywhere even when their features are used only occasionally.

Consider hosting

If the dashboard is slow too, discuss server load and error logs with the host. Changing hosting plans without diagnosing the cause may waste money. Image optimisation alone cannot fully solve a server-side issue either.

Compare one change at a time

  1. Choose a specific measure and record the baseline.
  2. Apply it in a test environment where possible.
  3. Check appearance and important functions.
  4. Measure again under the same conditions.

The goal is a usable website. Avoid changes that improve a score while breaking menus, forms or content.
