WordPress broken after an update: how to investigate

An error after an update is an important clue, but timing alone does not prove the cause. A controlled investigation is more useful than trying several fixes at once.

Identify what changed

Record the plugins, theme and WordPress version involved. Note when the problem started and whether it affects appearance, login or forms. Before-and-after screenshots make comparisons easier.

Check recovery mode

For some fatal errors, WordPress can send the administrator a recovery-mode email. Check that mailbox. Recovery mode can help narrow down a fault, but it does not automatically fix every cause. Only use a message you can verify belongs to your own installation.

Investigate on a test copy

A separate staging environment allows investigation without additional changes to the public site. A specialist can check recently changed components individually. If several plugins are changed together, it becomes difficult to tell which action helped.

A rollback is not a complete restore

Replacing older plugin files may not undo database changes. Before a rollback or backup restore, identify data added since the backup. This is especially important for shops and bookings. Avoid plugin packages from unknown download sources.

Test the result

  • Open important pages on desktop and mobile.
  • Send a clearly labelled test enquiry through the contact form.
  • Check search, login and essential business functions where applicable.
  • Refresh stale cache entries as needed.
  • Record the cause and the action that resolved it.

Website maintenance should therefore include more than clicking Update. A backup, a suitable maintenance window and a functional check belong to the same process.
