At a glance

When an address no longer exists, visitors need to understand what happened and how to continue. A friendly message alone rarely completes that job.

Planning website content together at a laptop
Clarify requirements, plan the work and verify the result.

Approach and context

State clearly that the requested content was not found at this address. Offer a small number of useful alternatives, such as search, main topics or contact for important journeys. A genuine error page should not simply be served as successful content. Check both the design in your theme and the response to a deliberately nonexistent address.

Implementation checklist

  • Write a clear short explanation and a few practical next steps.
  • Make search and selected main areas easy to reach.
  • Test an invented URL and have its HTTP status checked.

Illustrative example

A broken guide link leads to a page offering the knowledge overview and a search option, rather than a large decorative image with no useful way forward.

A common pitfall

Redirecting every missing address to the homepage can obscure the problem and miss the visitor’s original purpose.

How to check the outcome

Visitors recognise that the content is missing and can choose a useful alternative.
